From Vietnam to the United States, and back again

To the United States
I came to the United States as an international student, which meant learning a new country, a new language, and a new way of doing almost everything. I spent the first few years working out how the world around me operated and where I stood in it, keeping education at the center of everything. My steady focus earned me high honors and scholarships that carried me through college and university.
Returning
Back to Vietnam
After more than a decade in the United States, I came back to Vietnam and worked here for the first time. I had assumed it would feel like coming home. In practice, it was closer to starting over — the same country I grew up in, but with an entirely different set of rules about how work gets done, who decides what, and what goes unsaid. Learning those rules from the inside has turned out to be one of the more useful things I’ve done.
Now
What comes next
I’m expanding toward work that sits where I’ve always been most useful: spanning the distance between what an organization believes is happening and what is actually happening.
I saw that distance inside a U.S. corporation moving work to a foreign team, where the business case was sound but the people handing over the work had been left out of it. I saw it again inside a foreign-invested firm in Vietnam, where the ownership was European and the practice was entirely local. I’m looking at how to close that gap more deliberately, including through graduate study in international business in the United Kingdom — a country whose management practices have shaped organizations well beyond its borders, and one I have never visited. I want to understand how it is done there as an extension of what I have already done here, and develop a more integrated practice that draws on both.
